“Like seeds, our stories hold the promise of hope. Even in the darkest hours, we carry the inner light of those who believe. You are never alone — and your truth is a beautiful act of resistance.”
From Fear to Freedom: The Power of Resilience
For Adrian, a transgender man from Uganda, the decision to leave home was not one of choice, but of survival. After fleeing escalating threats, he spent nearly six years in Kenya — still living in fear — before finally resettling in Canada with support from Rainbow Railroad.
“I reached out to Rainbow Railroad because I was facing threats and unsafe conditions due to my gender identity and sexual orientation,” Adrian recalls. “I was seeking a safe place where I could live freely, authentically, and without fear.”
Now in Canada, Adrian is writing a new chapter — one rooted in safety, growth, and the radical act of simply being himself. “Canada is home. It’s the foundation upon which I’m building my future and where I truly feel I belong.”
The Power of Community and Solidarity
Adrian’s resettlement has been a journey of healing and transformation, but not without its challenges. The early days were filled with uncertainty. What made the difference was the support of a network that believed in him.
“With Rainbow Railroad’s help, along with friends, my school, and LGBTQ+-friendly spaces, I was finally able to find safety and start rebuilding my life,” he says. “Rainbow Railroad has been at the center of my journey to freedom.”
For Adrian, solidarity isn’t just a concept — it’s a lifeline. “Newcomers need more than just a new address. We need safe housing, mental health support, education, employment, and most importantly, affirming community connections,” he explains. “Even small acts of kindness and genuine support can reduce isolation and empower newcomers to rebuild their lives with dignity.”
What Pride — and Resistance — Really Mean
As Adrian prepares to celebrate Pride this year, he’s doing so not only in joy but in remembrance — and resistance. “Pride represents the liberation of living authentically, without fear,” he says. “It’s a celebration of who I am and a powerful stance of solidarity with those still seeking freedom.”
This year’s theme, Solidarity in Pride: Dare to Resist, resonates deeply with him. “To me, daring to resist means having the courage to live authentically, even when facing discrimination or injustice,” Adrian shares. “Every act of self-expression, every story shared, and every step forward is a form of resistance.”
A song that encapsulates his journey? “Take Me to Church by Hozier,” he says. “It challenges societal norms and speaks to the resilience of being true to oneself amidst adversity. That’s resistance.”
Hope, Joy, and the Fight for Liberation
Adrian’s story is one of survival, but also hope, strength, and transformation. “Joy, for me, is found in the quiet simplicity of being completely myself,” he says. “Even amidst challenges, those moments of joy feel like small but powerful victories.”
He believes resistance isn’t always loud. Sometimes, it’s the everyday choices: supporting someone quietly, amplifying their voice, or creating a safe space. “Solidarity means showing up consistently, not just during Pride. It’s a commitment to empathy and action.”
Looking ahead, Adrian envisions a world where queer liberation means “breathing without hesitation, loving without apology, and existing without fear.” It’s a future where every LGBTQI+ person can dance freely in their own light.
What gives him hope? “Our community’s spirit. The kindness of strangers. The quiet bravery I see every day,” he says. “We are not just surviving—we’re thriving, building, and dreaming.”
To anyone currently facing persecution, Adrian has this message: “Please know that you are not alone. Your truth is beautiful. There is a world beyond this pain — one where people see you, love you, and are working towards a future of freedom for you.”
And to Rainbow Railroad, he offers heartfelt gratitude: “They didn’t just move me to safety. They gave me hope when I was close to losing it all. Because of them, I am building a life where I can dream freely, love openly, and live as my true self.”
“Like seeds, our stories hold the promise of hope. Even in the darkest hours, we carry the inner light of those who believe. You are never alone — and your truth is a beautiful act of resistance.”
