Risking it all for a better life: How Michelle left Barbados

Growing up in Barbados, Michelle faced physical and emotional abuse and experienced relentless homophobia. At a young age, she internalized messages that gay people were “against god” and “went to hell.” She was beaten up by her brother for who she was.

At one point, Michelle realized that she had nothing to lose by trying to escape; she knew if she stayed, she would be killed. With the help of Rainbow Railroad, she made it to the United Kingdom, where her life has dramatically improved. She now lives a life full of pride and joy.
